Welcome 2024 - WorkUP Queensland Reference Group membership applications now open

Welcome 2024 - WorkUP Queensland Reference Group membership applications now open

We are looking forward to the year ahead. We know it brings significant changes to the sector and the workforce.

We have a particular focus on Growing the Workforce, responding to current attraction and recruitment pressures and preparing for expansion across the state. While the size and scale of growth is sometimes overwhelming, we are pleased to hear your ideas and solutions including how leaders are using the Workforce Capability Framework in different ways, such as in the recruitment process.

In 2024 WorkUP Queensland will continue to roll out Walking Together, Learning Together.

We are also continuously improving the Knowledge Translation support and will be delivering both regular and new professional development opportunities.

We are grateful for your regular input as our work is richer when shaped with the sector. The WorkUP Queensland structure includes our Reference Group. Its members provide their time and support, share workforce insights and analysis with us and champion our work.

Recently we have had a few members step down, leaving a gap of voices from

  • Sexual violence services, and
  • Services in West Queensland.

If you are interested in being a member of the WorkUP Queensland Reference Group, please read the Terms of Reference and Application Process document. In this document there is a link to the application form.

Safer Futures Symposium - Bridging Intersections in Youth Support and Domestic Violence, Sexual Violence and Women’s Wellbeing Sectors for Early Intervention

Safer Futures Symposium

Bridging Intersections in Youth Support and Domestic Violence, Sexual Violence and Women’s Wellbeing Sectors for Early Intervention

Date: Thursday, 21 March 2024
Time: 9:00am - 5:00pm AEST (Queensland Time)
Location: voco Brisbane City Centre, 85/87 N Quay, Brisbane City QLD 4000

Through undertaking the Respect-Based Training for Funded Youth Services project, we have discovered that there is an extensive range of resources on respectful relationships created for and with young people. Our sector contributes significantly to the development of these resources.

Hosted by WorkUP Queensland and True Relationships & Reproductive Health, this symposium aims to create a collaborative platform where the youth support sector and domestic violence, sexual violence, and women’s wellbeing sectors connect to address the multifaceted challenges faced by vulnerable young people navigating their relationships. The overarching theme underscores the collective commitment to influencing young people’s perspectives, breaking cycles of violence, and shaping positive outcomes for the next generation.

The full-day event will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn and work through the unique intersecting barriers that affect vulnerable young people. Attendees will have the option to participate in a range of workshops throughout the day as well as hearing from two different panels. In the first panel, we will hear from young people who will share their personal experiences of engaging with youth support services, how this has influenced them and their relationships today and their role of supporting and influencing their peers. In the afternoon, attendees will hear from a range of youth support services who will discuss their successes and learnings of engaging with young people. Additionally, attendees will meet and hear keynote speaker, youth worker and TV personality Brooke Blurton speak on her experience as an Aboriginal woman, a victim/survivor and youth worker.

Registrations are now open for the Safer Futures Symposium.

Beyond Awareness - Culturally Safe Practices in our Sector

Beyond Awareness - Culturally Safe Practices in our Sector

Beyond Awareness – Culturally Safe Practice in our Sector, WorkUP Queensland’s flagship program aimed at supporting sector workforce to embed cultural safety in its approach, services and interactions with users, and workplaces.

Being informed through community consultations, the program has developed into a series of four face to face workshops being piloted initially to domestic and family violence, sexual violence and women’s health and wellbeing sector services from Brisbane, Moreton, Ipswich and Gold Coast. It will be monitored and evaluated for further delivery across Queensland.

Cultural safety is beneficial for everyone who walks in through the doors of your service, but for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who are staff or accessing culturally safe and appropriate assistance while in crisis, it can be the beginning of a healing journey. Our call to action is to reflect on the temperature of cultural capability across your workforce and environment in preparation for how this program could benefit your workforce.

The dates for this not-to-be-missed program are:

  • 1st Workshop: Wednesday 10 April 2024 - History
  • 2nd Workshop: Wednesday 24 April 2024 - Communication
  • 3rd Workshop: Wednesday 8 May 2024 - Practice
  • 4th Workshop: Wednesday 22 May 2024 - Relationships & partnerships

If you work in Brisbane, Moreton, Ipswich or the Gold Coast, please reach out to workforce@healingfoundation.org.au with any queries about attending these workshops or to go on our email list. Flyer and registration links coming soon!

Growing our Workforce

Growing our Workforce

The Grow the Workforce Project is a dedicated response to the significant challenges in attracting qualified and/or suitably capable workers, often exacerbated in regional, rural, and remote locations across our specialist sector. The project has made significant headway in the recent months and exciting to see it taking shape.

The inaugural Project Working Group is established and great to see representation from our sector leaders across the state, along with the Tertiary, Vocational Education & Training (VET) and wider training/employment system. This critical touchpoint will be critical for the sector, and we look forward to seeing what comes from these cross-sector relationships.

WorkUP has been working on a Discovery Report that pulls together our emerging learning and insights from stakeholder engagement, research and scanning phases. We are developing a picture of emerging opportunities and challenges. We aim to release and share the report soon, to further our understanding as we look to prioritising and co-designing effective and realistic workforce responses.

WorkUP is also embarking on an Information Development Plan (IDP) to create a strategic roadmap for managing data effectively to inform the development of the Growing the Workforce project. Meaningful, useful and relevant workforce data, logistics and forecasting will rely on accurate and timely workforce information. An Information Development Plan (IDP) helps guide the development, management, and dissemination of statistical information for the sector.

This work is iterative and our plans will be shaped by the sector. We have heard some innovative and creative work and ideas that already are being undertaken in this space by our stakeholders. Please continue to let us know emerging ideas and opportunities for strengthening and sustaining these local ideas in response to the significant challenges in attracting, recruiting, and retaining our people.

Stay tuned for our open sessions taking place over the coming months. We invite you to participate and provide feedback and advice that will continue to shape our strategies.

Workforce Capability Framework in 2024

Workforce Capability Framework in 2024

2023 was a busy year with the launch of Workforce Capability Framework. We had lots of conversations and engagement with services about how to bring it to life in their workplace.

We were delighted with the People, Culture and HR forum in November with 60 attendees and ‘buzz’ in the room. Alisa Hall, Rosie O’Malley and Amy Wormwell shared some of their insights for how The Framework can support us to develop our people and sustain ourselves in the important work that we do.

You can catchup by viewing the presentations here.

  • The Journey – Alisa talks about working with the sector to create The Framework.
  • Evidence and Advocacy - Rosie discusses the importance of evidence and advocacy.
  • Responsibility, Reflective Practice & Resilience – Amy talks about how we can support our own resilience.

We also heard from Grace Tame who shared some of her experiences and how she sustains herself in her advocacy and leadership.  Grace talked about staying focused on purpose and not taking on everything, ensuring that we have an identity outside of our work, running marathons and art!

This year we are offering services practical and tailored implementation support for The Framework. This will involve online workshops and tailored support.  If you’re wondering where to begin, this project will help you find the entry point, get started and bring your ideas to life. If you have already started the implementation, you are still eligible for the support as it will be tailored to your needs.

This tailored approach supports individual service needs, the sharing of learning and resources for the benefit of the whole sector.

You can express interest in being involved here.

Keep an eye out too for launch of a suite of practical resources and tools that are informed by and compliment The Framework. This includes:

  • A supporting resource – tips for implementing the Framework, including scenario-based examples.
  • Reflective Question resource that aligns with the capability domains in the framework
  • Job interview guide and question bank for recruitment purposes

If you have any questions, reach out to us at workforce@healingfoundation.org.au.
